Rodolfo Borrell’s apparent comments suggesting Daniel Agger as the perfect defender for Barcelona change nothing in the saga linking him with a move to the Nou Camp.
There are plenty of reasons why Agger would be misguided and ill conceived to consider a move away from Anfield, with the likelihood being that he will be the primary centre back at the club next season.
The fact Borrell deems him good enough to play for Barcelona is testament to the good work the club has done, turning him into the player he is today in the Liverpool back four.
“Agger has the right characteristics to adapt to Barca’s play. He is a very trustworthy centrehalf, above all on the ball, because he comes out very well with it. In a style like Barca’s where he starts to build moves from the keeper,” he told Catalan radio station SER Esports.
Agger is in the unique position where he is the main man at the moment when it comes to Liverpool’s defence.
He couldn’t argue against the appeal of a move to Barcelona considering the magnitude of the Spanish club but he certainly wouldn’t enjoy the same squad status he currently gets under Brendan Rodgers.
His position at Liverpool is undoubted, proved by the fact he started in every single Premier League game he was selected for last season, being taken off on only three occasions and missing just three matches.
It’s that relationship he has with Rodgers which is also vital in this saga because he doesn’t have any issue or trouble with the management which can sometimes force a player out of a club.
Rodgers recognises how important he is on the left side of central defence when it comes to work the ball through the Liverpool team, eventually maintaining pressure over the opposition.
Agger is also a player who has become deeply affectionate towards the club, fans and area which he currently plays for.
“I still have three years left and I intend to fulfil them. There are always rumours, but who is creating them? I don’t know,” said the defender on the rumours.
The fact he has tattoos on his arms and hands in tribute to Liverpool and the club’s history questions the logic behind his thought processes when it comes to possibly leaving the club.
His age is also a very important for Liverpool to protect him and prevent him from ever expressing a desire or urgency to leave the club.
Rodgers is in the process of creating a very young team at Liverpool with Raheem Sterling, Suso, Jonjo Shelvey, Jordan Henderson, Jordon Ibe, Daniel Sturridge and plenty of other younger players all forming the squad.
Add to that the players Liverpool are currently linked with such as Christian Atsu, Tiago Ilori and Luis Alberto and it becomes very clear very quickly how important it is for Rodgers to hang onto the 28-year-old Danish defender.
Borrell’s comments have effectively been blown out of proportion because at no point does he state that Agger is on his way to Barcelona.
Radio interviews put the interviewees on the spot and Borrell has given an honest answer when asked if Agger is good enough to play for Barcelona.
It changes nothing, he is and will be a Liverpool player next season.
