Ever since Mesut Ozil landed on English soil following his transfer dead-line day move from Real Madrid for a reported fee of £42.5m, the German international has been ushered with heaps of praise from all corners. But, manager Arsene Wenger has honoured him with probably the best compliment of all. According to the Frenchman, Ozil can become the next Dennis Bergkamp for this iconic club.
The Dutchman is undoubtedly one of the greatest ever players of all time (and Arsenal too) and Wenger always found that extra bit of time to laud Bergkamp’s incredible qualities. Bergkamp joined the Gunners in 1995 from Inter Milan for a reported fee of £7.5m and earned the status of a legend, after mesmerizing the Highbury faithful for 11 long years.
Wenger has compared the impact and also the playing style of Ozil with the Dutch legend. The acquisition of Bergkamp helped Arsenal become a force in European football, while his signing had a symbolic value and a seismic-effect in terms of attracting major talents across the Europe.
Wenger said as quoted in the club’s official website:
“He is a similar type to Bergkamp. Dennis was maybe a more prolific goalscorer, a more striker type. But he created a lot and his evolution through his career was an adaptation to his physical qualities – when he could not score any more he became a great provider.
“Ozil, at the start, is more of a midfielder mentality, and Dennis at the start was more of a striker mentality. But Ozil can score too.”
Do you think Ozil can be the next Bergkamp for Arsenal in the years to come?
