Luis Suarez: Italian bite may spell disaster for Liverpool striker

There are always two or three defining moments to a World Cup. Stunning goals, wild celebrations, and unfortunately, rabid acts of unjustifiable violence from superstar players that certainly know better.

None understand the implications of attacking an opponent more than Uruguay striker Luis Suarez, who has previously been handed lengthy bans for inexplicably biting fellow professionals in games.

His last ban coming only two years ago, with his period of reflection sat on the sidelines certainly convincing a vast majority of the footballing world that he was a reformed character; but yesterday’s debacle will obliterate any positive feelings from fans and pundits concerning the player, with the 27-year-old on the cusp of being tossed into perennial footballing limbo.

The world’s press simultaneously sparked into flame as Suarez sunk his teeth into the shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini near the end of Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Italy, with the hugely negative aftermath surely a precursor to a lengthy, well-deserved ban for the Liverpool man.

The fallout has been extensive, with PFA chief Gordon Taylor saying today that the end may be nigh for the striker:

“It is a big problem for Liverpool,” Taylor told the BBC. “I fear for his career.”

Various psycologists have been asked about his behavior in the last 24 hours, with Dr Saima Latif claiming that Suarez’s penchant for biting is a continuation of a frustration leading back to his childhood,

“Biting is an act borne of frustration, stress and loss of control,” Latif said in the Telegraph,

“Luis Suárez is likely to have felt humiliated and put down in some way that he wanted to get one over on his opponent. Most people faced with these emotions would try to walk away and simmer down.”

“Research shows that the most violent period of our lives is when we are between three and four years old. That is the most aggressive stage of development, because if we don’t get what we want, we fight and lash out. It’s also the stage when the Id takes over; a basic instinct when we can’t control our temperament.”

FIFA have confirmed that they will look into the issue, with the maximum retrospective punishment being a 24 match or two year ban.

Nigeria 1-3 Argentina – No straightforward victory for the South American giants, with Nigeria to make life difficult for Messi and co, but I can’t see past an Argentina win.

Bosnia & Herzegovina 1-1 Iran – I’ve backed Bosnia all the way through this tournament, but they keep falling short of expectations, so I’ve gone for an unexpected draw against the Iranians, which would not be enough to take the Asians through to the knockout round.

Ecuador 0-2 France – Les Bleus are on a roll, and I can’t see Ecuador stopping them in Rio.

Honduras 0-2 Switzerland – An easy Swiss win for me, albeit one that will see the Honduran players become progressively more and more aggressive. Ottmar Hitzfeld would do well to extract his star men from the fray if/when the match is effectively won.
