There were fears today that Luis Suarez could miss the World Cup after suffering a training ground injury on Wednesday. The Uruguayan striker injured his knee and was swiftly sent for an MRI scan which revealed damage to the meniscus.
Uruguay face Costa Rica in their first group game on 14th June before facing England five days later in Sao Paulo. Manager Oscar Tabarez will be hopeful to have his star striker fit and ready to play in what promises to be a tough group.
The Liverpool striker is in the form of his career after a scintillating season in the Premiership. The 27-year-old scored 31 goals and was named the double footballer of the year for his efforts and with 38 international goals to his name, Suarez is an integral part to his country’s hopes in Brazil.
The Uruguay camp are optimistic he will be fit but the length of the injury will depend on the extent of the damage which is likely to be discovered on Thursday. Injuries such as this usually take between four and six weeks to recover from so it will be touch and go as to whether the Liverpool man can be fit in time.
Suarez is the second big-name striker to be doubtful for the World Cup with Colombia’s Radamel Falcao also struggling to be fit in time after suffering a knee injury playing for Monaco back in January.
The front man is due to have surgery on Thursday and looks certain to be missing from the friendly fixtures against Northern Island and Slovenia on 31st May and 5th June respectively.
