Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes the Red Devils are going forward in the right direction is their continued effort to sign Southampton star Luke Shaw.
The 18-year-old left-back enjoyed a brilliant season with the Saints and has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Earlier we reported United’s £27m bid was rejected and the Red Devils made an improved £30m offer for Shaw, who wanted to join the Premier League giants in May.
Meulensteen believes incoming United manager Louis van Gaal needs to address the problem in central defending area and also in the central midfield position in order to strengthen the squad for the next season.
“These young, talented players who have got lots of potential for future years to come (is what United need going forward) so if United can strike a deal for Luke Shaw then I think it’s a good one,” Meulensteen told Sky Sports News Radio.
“Every good and every successful team, if you look at it from a historical point of view, they always have had a very good base.”
“A good spine to the team with a good goalkeeper, two good centre backs, good central midfielders and obviously strikers that can score goals. In regard to the centre backs and central midfield areas, there is definitely something that needs to be addressed (at United),” he added.
United have already lost two of their veteran defenders, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic as the duo have left the club as a free agent. The Red Devils are yet to make any signing, despite strongly being linked with Shaw and several other summer targets.
The former Barcelona and Bayer Munich manager needs to strengthen United’s centre-half and the heart of the midfield. Van Gaal needs to bring in reinforcements in those key areas in order to help the Red Devils challenge for the league title and also return to the Champions League.
