New Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola has revealed he has no intention to sign Chelsea defender David Luiz.
‘Luiz is not coming to Munich. We already have four or five central defenders. I am very happy with them. The speculation is not true.’
David Luiz’ future was in doubt following the arrival of new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. The 50-year old hinted the Brazilian may be one of the first players to leave the side this summer. A potential part-exchange deal was rumoured to be taking place for Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney.
David Luiz and Juan Mata were offered in a bid to sign the England international, but the Blues vehemently denied the allegations. Mourinho has also recently made a U-turn on the decision to axe Luiz and has adamantly stated he isn’t for sale for any price.
Following Bayern Munich’s recent 4-2 defeat to title rivals Borussia Dortmund in the Super Cup, reports emerged Guardiola was in the market for a new central defender. However, the German side have many options at the back and can also utilise Javi Martinez in a deeper role if needed.
David Luiz made 30 Premier League appearances last season, and was one of the side’s top performers. The Brazilian international has represented his country on 27 occasions. He also featured in this summer’s Confederations Cup – leading the side to a third consecutive Confederations Cup win.
He recently underwent talks with Mourinho about his future, and looks to be staying at Chelsea for the foreseeable future. He signed for the Europa League winners in 2011, and has gone on to make 109 appearances, scoring 12 goals.
A number of sides were said to be interested in Luiz this summer, with Barcelona frequently being linked. Chelsea value the defender at around £40M, and no side has offered close to his asking price.
