Every time a new player comes in to a new club, it is expected of him to say few good words about his new club. Mesut Ozil, the new signing of Arsenal who joined from Real Madrid is of no exception here, as he claims that he would have joined the Gunners for free.
The 24-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders on earth at this moment, and his expulsion from Madrid has raised a few eyebrows. The Germany international didn’t want to move away from Bernabeu this summer, but soon got disillusioned with life at Madrid, and admitted that he lost the trust, faith and transparency at the Capital club.
“In some way, that conversation flicked a switch in me and made me realise what I had lost at Madrid: transparency, trust, respect,” Ozil told German media outlet Die Welt.
“He [Wenger] told me exactly how he saw me, how he wanted to use me, what he expected of me.
When asked, if he was feeling the pressure of the huge amount of money spent on him, Ozil replied that it was something beyond his control, and that he “would have changed to Arsenal without a transfer fee.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean that Ozil would have joined the Gunners for nothing (ideally that would have gone down as legendary stuff) but such comments were made on the context of transfer fees, which has been widely misunderstood.
Till the final day of the transfer window, Arsenal’s summer painted a dreadful image in the heart of the fans. The club, with new financial boost, failed to purchase any top players, despite Arsene Wenger given reported £70 million transfer war-chest.
The Frenchman convinced Ozil on phone to join Arsenal and signed him up on the transfer deadline day for a club record fee of £42.5 million. The German star, who played over 150 matches for Madrid, acknowledged the faith shown in him by Wenger and has pledged to repay it with strong performances on pitch.
