Portugal newspaper Record last week published couple of articles where they claimed that Manchester United could make a late attempt to sign their long term target Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan.
Benfica like other Portuguese clubs are a typical selling club. They have sold Lazar Markovic this season already to Liverpool but it seems highly unlikely that they would sell Gaitan to any foreign club this summer.
The Argentine winger has been linked with Monaco and Atletico Madrid earlier in the summer. Record claimed that Manchester United were looking to sign the Argentine winger as they saw him as an alternative for Angel di Maria. They even claimed that United had lodged a formal offer for him.
Record claimed United’s bid was more than what Atletico Madrid and Monaco had offered, but Benfica would continue to refuse such invitations, unless the player’s buy-out clause is met, which is something in the region of €45m.
However, United have signed Di Maria from Real Madrid for a British record transfer fee and thus ends all speculations of them making a move for Gaitan. It seems like Monaco have lost their interest as well and the player now focusses on continuing his career with Benfica.
Record reports today that United have given up on Gaitan and that his agent will be in Lisbon this weekend to negotiate a contract extension with Benfica.
Another season. Another transfer window. Another Gaitan rumour. Hope it ends someday!
