The general consensus among the Manchester United fans is that the Red Devils will buy few quality players in the January window, despite manager David Moyes claiming that he won’t be going for any panic buys.

Manchester United scouts are very busy in watching players in Portugal and according to latest reports from Portugal newspaper A Bola; United scouts were present at the Bonfim Stadium to watch Benfica players in action against Vitoria.

Last month, both the Portuguese newspapers A Bola and O Jogo reported that Manchester United are seriously considering a move for Benfica trio of Nemanja Matic, Niko Gaitan and Ezequiel Garay. The report said Moyes is plotting a move for a collective amount of around €80million for the three players.

Garay, the former Real Madrid player would cost in the region of £18m and is a potential long term target for the Red Devils. With Rio Ferdinand reaching the apogee of his career, United could invest on a solid central defender, now.

Likewise, central midfield is one of the areas where Moyes needs to invest heavily. Matic is arguably the best player of the season in the Portuguese league and is also a transfer target of Chelsea.

Likewise, Moyes could invest on the wing position as well, should Nani and Ashley Young depart in the January transfer window. Gaitan, is a top winger for Benfica and the 25-year-old could be allowed to move, if the price is right.

It is highly unthinkable that Benfica would be willing to part ways with all the three players in one single window, but a move for any of them cannot be ruled out.
