Manchester United are one step away from signing Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero, according to reports in Italy.
Italian newspaper Gazzetta are reporting that Manchester United are closing in on the Sampdoria backup.
The deal is being led by the players agent Mino Raiola.
Brendan Rodgers also wants to bring the Argentina number one to Liverpool but it looks as though the Reds may miss out to their Premier League rivals.
Yesterday, we also reported that Manchester United were ready to hijack Liverpool’s move for the 27-year old.
Sergio Romero spent last season on loan with French Ligue 1 runners-up AS Monaco but played backup to Danijel Subašić.
Despite this, Alejandro Sabella selected Romero as his number one for this summer’s World Cup. The goalkeeper pulled off some smart saves and was the hero of their semi-final shootout victory over the Netherlands.
Romero and Argentina went 485 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal at the World Cup until Mario Götze’s extra-time winner for Germany in the final.
Manchester United currently have highly-rated youngster David de Gea as their first-choice goalkeeper.
