Manchester United have been linked with a move for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria for the umpteenth time this year. According to reports from Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the Red Devils are willing to sign the Argentine star but would pay only €21m when he has a €50m buyout clause on his contract.
Well, Manchester United is probably the only club in England, where wing play has been given so much importance throughout the club’s history and that situation hasn’t changed even with the arrival of new manager David Moyes. Players like Ashley Young and Nani have largely under performed this season, hence it may well happen that Moyes is looking out for a world class winger to bolster his squad.
Fair enough. But, still the story is hard to digest for more than one reasons. Di Maria has been a regular and important member of this Madrid side and even Bale’s arrival hasn’t changed his position. He has a contract till 2018 and has featured in 12 of 13 league games for the Los Blancos and has started 9 of those.
Secondly, the price quoted is equally laughable. For a player, who is regular to the side, has a long term contract with a buyout clause of €50m, why would Man Utd even think of preparing a bid with an offer less than half of his price tag?
And finally and most importantly, this can be another ploy from the Catalan based newspaper to shake things up. Mundo Deportivo is a Catalan based paper and this could very well be their ploy to stir the plot. So, we take it as nothing but a wild rumour at the moment with substance of truth in it.
