Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes that Eden Hazard is a better player than Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo. The Madrid forward won the Ballon d’Or award for the third time in January, but Mourinho still insists that Hazard has performed better than the Manchester United legend.
Mourinho, having worked with both Ronaldo and Hazard, feels that Belgium star is one of the three best players in the world at the moment. The former Inter Milan manager is not a popular figure in Madrid, and his remarks will likely to go down badly among the Madrid fans.
“Eden is coming with big status now and was voted one of the top ten players in Europe last year,” Mourinho said as quoted by The Times. “In my opinion he should be in the top three, not in the top ten. I think he is the best player in our country. He’s alongside Messi and Ronaldo, depending on the season they have.
According to Mourinho, winning titles is everything in football. He feels that Hazard should be considered a better player at present because Ronaldo did not win any trophies last season. Hazard on the other hand won the Premier League and Capital One Cup at Chelsea, as well as being voted PFA Player of the Year.
“But they have to win some titles, no? Football without titles is nothing. Last season Messi won the treble. He won three competitions last year, he reached the Copa America final and had a fantastic season for him and for his team.
“But last season Eden was above Ronaldo, in spite of the fact that Ronaldo was fantastic and scored an incredible number of goals. I don’t like players or managers to win individual trophies without the team. In my personal view, every football player in the world has to put the team first, but he has no titles.”
Mourinho also hinted that Hazard is more of a team player, and that the Belgium international has already reached the levels of Messi & Ronaldo.
Make no mistake, Hazard is a great player, but he is certainly not better than Ronaldo. And Mourinho’s logic is equally flawed. If Messi fails to win any title next season, and Hazard goes on to win the Premier League, will he be considered better than the Argentine? Mind games, Jose?
