A lot is expected from Arsenal’s new signing Mesut Ozil, who joined the North London club on the transfer deadline day from Real Madrid.
With every new signing, there is always some expectations to go with it. But, Ozil’s case is bit different. He is not just another summer signing. It is something more than that.
The 24-year-old is the first and the only big signing of the summer for Arsenal. The Gunners have endured nothing but frustrations throughout the summer and this signing brings a new lease of life at the club. Plus, the club has shown great ambition in securing his signature.
Arsene Wenger promised everyone that he will splash the money, if the player is right for him. Out of everybody’s amazement, the Gunners dished out £42.5 million for his services. It was not only their record transfer fee, but the money paid by them was more than what both the Manchester clubs have ever paid to land their best players.
While there is no doubt that a player like Ozil will add enough quality to the Arsenal side, the question is – can the Gunners really mount a serious title challenge with him?
Well, the Gunners should definitely aim to challenge for the Premier League title but one gets the feeling that probably the squad is not yet ready for that. Mind, this is a team that finished in top four by the skin of their teeth and trailed behind the leaders Manchester United by 16 points last season.
We all have been hearing this for some time now that Arsenal are just couple of signings away from challenging for the title, but in reality, they are couple of injuries (especially strike department) away from going into catastrophe. If they can at least take themselves into the title race, and win a few trophies, with Ozil, it will be considered as a successful campaign for them.
