Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas – arguably the biggest Premier League signing of this transfer season.
The statement read in the Blues official website read, ” Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona. The 27-year-old has joined on a five-year contract and will wear the no. 4 shirt.”
The former Arsenal skipper was linked with a move away from the Spanish giants and was rumoured to be attracting interest from the Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Liverpool.
However, Chelsea have won the race for the 27-year-old’s signature. Fabregas has expressed his delight after joining Chelsea and claims he has unfinished business left in the Premier League.
“Firstly I would like to thank everyone at FC Barcelona where I enjoyed three wonderful years. It was my childhood club and I will always be proud and honoured that I had a chance to play for such a great team,” Fabregas said.
However, the Spain international’s services was no longer required at Camp Nou and wanted to offload him to raise funds to bring in new faces to the club. A versatile midfielder, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or much in deeper role, while also capable of playing the false 9 role as well.
The signing of the Spaniard will not go down well with Arsenal fans, where he is considered to be the Emirates favourtie. Meanwhile, Fabregas’ move to Chelsea will be a blow for United and Liverpool, who were after his services.
