Napoli are showing great interest in Benfica star Nemanja Matic and according to reports from Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Rafael Benitez is ready to move heaven and earth to land the skillful Serbian international. However, the Spaniard will face a strong test from Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester United, if the reports are to be believed.
The 25-year-old joined Chelsea in 2009, but after making only three Premier League appearances, he was sold to Benfica in 2011, as a part of the deal that brought defender David Luiz to London. The Blues are thought to be interested in him while the player himself said in an interview:
“I would probably like to stay another year with Benfica, but if somebody like Mourinho wanted to bring me back to London it would be difficult to turn down.
“It would be a great chance to prove that I can play in the Premier League.”
Recently, it has been reported in Portugal newspapers – both A Bola and O Jogo – that Manchester United are also considering a move for the highly rated midfielder.
Now, it seems like Napoli boss Rafael Benitez has taken a keen interest in the Serbian and wants to add him in the January transfer window. Matic would cost in the region of €27m or even more as he has a contract till 2018.
According to calcionews24.com, the two clubs have already made a contact while initial talks have taken place. However, the deal seems complex at the moment, not only because there is a load of competition but Benfica do not want to lose their precious star in the January transfer window.
