Liverpool legend Phil Thompson claims the Reds should command the transfer fee involving Luis Suarez’s potential move to Barcelona and should only allow the striker leave if the Catalan club pay a world-record fee.
Last summer, Welsh international Gareth Bale completed his dream switch to Real Madrid, which saw Tottenham Hotspur cash in a reported fee of £85m. The former Liverpool defender believes the Uruguayan international is far better than the 24-year-old Welshman.
Thompson believes Suarez is “far better” than Bale and the former Ajax man will terrorise smaller teams, when Barcelona face them in the league fixtures.
“I don’t think Suarez should leave for less than £80million. This guy is far better than Gareth Bale. He gives you far more, particularly in the lesser games,” Thompson told the Liverpool ECHO.
“If he goes to Barcelona they will find that against the lower teams, when a lot of players don’t turn up, he will be bang up for it.”
“This has been coming. Some foreigners like Sami Hyypia come to the club and develop a strong attachment and don’t want to go elsewhere.”
“But the reality is that most foreign players will only stay for a few years. Liverpool turned Suarez into a world class striker and will make a massive profit.
“We’ve got to spend it wisely. Spurs didn’t do that last year and struggled to compete for the top four,” he added.
Barcelona are in pole position to seal a deal for Suarez and reports in Spain suggest the La Liga giants have already agreed a €90m deal for the PFA Player of the Year.
With Suarez’s behaviour coming under the spot-light after the striker’s latest biting incident against Italy in the World Cup, it is best for Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers to cash in on the sale of the striker.
