They are near the top of the odds board as favorites to be playing in the Finals next June, but they’d better capitalize on their talent soon, as their championship window may be closing faster than they anticipated.

The moves made by the Warriors in the off-season suggested that they are all-in with the current roster. After the season-long drama between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole, the team decided to ship off the younger player and keep the aging veteran around, and then added 38-year-old Chris Paul to the rotation. They now have the second-oldest roster in the league, behind only the Clippers.
Golden State’s championship odds are currently sitting at +1000, the 6th-shortest of any team in the NBA. But it might be the last season that they enter the year as a legit Finals threat, especially if they are unable to figure out the Klay Thompson situation.

Thompson has a contract that expires at the end of the coming season and is scheduled to become a free agent, and there hasn’t been much progress in the way of contract talks. In fact, it was reported last week that Thompson and the Warriors had hit a “dead spot” in their negotiations, and that a significant gap still exists in what the player wants versus what the team is willing to pay for him.
As Shams Charania reported on Monday, Thompson wants much more than what the team is offering, and that “all signs point” to him hitting free agency next summer.
Thompson has dropped hints that may suggest his potential and eventual departure. A cryptic Instagram post raised eyebrows last week upon the news of the lack of negotiations, which featured a caption “The type of energy I’m on all season” while Tupac Shakur’s Me Against The World played in the background. On Monday, it was revealed that Thompson said he is aiming to have the best season of his career during the upcoming campaign.
