Liverpool and Manchester United target signs new deal; Release clause stands at €35m

Liverpool and Manchester United are set to miss out on their transfer target Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica. The 26 year old Argentine who is regarded as one of the hottest property in European Football has signed a contract extension with the Portuguese side until 2018. Media Outlet RTP has confirmed the new which will come as a blow for both Liverpool and United, both of the Premier League giants who were interested in the player.

However, there is something interesting which comes with the contract extension. Gaitan’s earlier transfer release clause stood at €45m but the new deal will see the figure drop to €35m. Gaitan had joined Benfica in 2010 and already has 6 titles o his name playing under Jorge Jesus. The attacking midfielder was influential last season as the Eagles won the Portuguese league.

Gaitan would have easily walked into either of Liverpool or United’s current eleven. French side Monaco were also believed to be interested in the player, but it now appears that all of the so called ‘potential suitors’ will now have to look elsewhere to play a player of a similar caliber as Gaitan, something which will not be easy.
