Liverpool are set to address their goalscoring problems this summer and sign a quality forward.
According to reports all over the English media, Liverpool are extremely interested in Aston Villa’ striker Christian Benteke. The towering Belgian has been in outstanding form since Sherwood took charge and the Belgian could very well be on his way to Liverpool after the FA Cup final.
It is believed that Brendan Rodgers is set to continue as Liverpool manager next season and has identified Benteke as an ideal replacement for the injured Daniel Sturridge. The likes of Lambert, Borini and Balotelli have failed to impress and will be allowed to leave should an offer come in.
Benteke has spent 3 seasons in the Premier League, scoring 49 goals. The Belgian could add to that tally against Arsenal at Wembley later this month.
Reports state that the Belgian is keen on making a bigger move and would relish the challenge at Liverpool. With Daniel Sturridge set to miss the first couple of months due to injury, Benteke will be expected to come in straight away and start scoring goals.
While the decision to court Benteke is a bit of a surprise, considering his style of play doesn’t really mesh in with that of Brendan Rodgers’. But it will certainly be very interesting to see if Rodgers is prepared to alter his approach next season in order for the Reds to succeed.
Despite the absurd fee quoted, Benteke is a good player and will strengthen most sides in the Premier League. However, the key to him doing well at Liverpool is how Rodgers sets up the team and whether they play to their striker’ strengths.
Also, the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in the Belgian as well.
