Jose Mourinho lamented on many occasions last season for not having a striker who can score 20 goals in the league. Let alone 20 goals, the three strikers he had at disposal couldn’t score 20 goals combined. Top scorer was Samuel Eto’o with nine league goals.
This time he simply cannot give any excuse. He has been provided with a class striker, who managed just 27 league goals for the reigning La Liga champions. Diego Costa would be expected to replicate the form of last season, but Mourinho is faced with another selection conundrum – what to do with Romelu Lukaku?
The Belgium striker was out on loan for the last couple of seasons, where he impressed heavily. But still, he faces an uncertain future at Chelsea. Even Demba Ba leaving the club didn’t help his situation either.
Reports from Spain suggested that Lukaku could join Atletico Madrid on a season long loan, but there are other interested parties as well including Everton and Juventus.
According to Belgian newspaper Sportwereld, Chelsea have made it clear that any interested parties will have to pay €28m to secure the services of the Belgian. Lukaku is unhappy with how things have gone for him at Chelsea, while the player is keen to resolve his situation at the earliest.
At the moment, the only way he can secure a permanent move elsewhere, if Chelsea reduce their asking price. But that possibility is highly unlikely. Chelsea have changed their transfer policy of late where they sell players for a high price (Mata, Luiz, De Bryune) and buy good players for a relatively low price to balance the book. A reason why Chelsea have slapped such a high price tag on his shoulders. As it stands, Lukaku could be asked to go out on loan again.
