Lyon, who knocked out Real Madrid of 16, take a 3-1 lead in the second leg against fellow Ligue 1 side Bordeaux.

Bordeaux v Lyon Preview

Bordeaux has been on an unbeaten streak in the Champions League before losing the first leg at Lyon. They were leading Ligue 1 until losing Saturday but do have several matches in hand. Lyon currently lead Ligue 1 but only on goal differnce. The two teams are very familiar with each other and there won’t be many surprises.

The first leg was a crucial result for Lyon but most experts did not expect them to score three goals. The Bordeaux defense had been very strong all season and is tied for the Ligue 1 low of 25 total goals conceded. With a two goal deficit to overcome, Bordeaux will have to send players forward. The players who will be key for Bordeaux in the attack are Marouane Chamakh and Yoann Gourcuff.

If Lyon could hold Real Madrid to one goal over two matches, then theoretically they should be able to do the same to Bordeaux. Unfortunately, football can be unpredictable and this might not be the case. Lyon doesn’t need to score any goals but will have chances on the counterattack. If they can hold Bordeaux to one goal or less late into the second half (as they did with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu) Lyon could look for a goal on the counterattack to clinch their spot in the semifinals.

Lyon have one foot into the semifinals with their performance in the first leg but if they look to far ahead, Bordeaux could surprise them. This doesn’t seem likely as Lyon should be focused and have shown their ability to play a defensive match.

Bordeaux v Lyon Prediction

Bordeaux will win the match 1-0 but Lyon advances 3-2 on aggregate.
