Following a disastrous campaign this year, Liverpool have been linked with moves for several strikers across Europe. Having scored more than a 100 goals last season, the Reds have been toothless upfront, due to the recurring injuries to Daniel Sturridge and the departure of Luis Suarez.
Time and again this season, the Reds have failed to convert their chances. Turning defeats into draws and draws into wins was a key feature under Brendan Rodgers last season.
However, the lack of a clinical presence upfront has been Liverpool’s undoing this season.
According to reports in the English media, Liverpool are keen to add to their attack with the 30m signing of Christian Benteke. The Aston Villa forward has been in sensational form since February and is seen as the man to solve Liverpool’s problems.
Although Benteke is young and talented, here are a few reasons why the Reds should avoid him.
Limited striker
Christian Benteke is a limited striker and offers little off the ball. The towering Belgian is a traditional target man who does not fit Liverpool’s quick transitional football. Having experienced the issues with Balotelli and Lambert, Liverpool would be foolish to let Brendan Rodgers work with another static forward.
Overpriced
Benteke averages about 12-15 goals a season. While there is no doubt that Premier League players are overpriced, 30m for Benteke just does not make sense. Despite being considerably young, the Belgian will never live up to the price tag.
Inconsistent
Benteke has goals in him. But his time in England shows that he can be a very inconsistent player. The Belgian seems to enjoy scoring in spells and then disappears for a while. Even this season, Benteke only scored 3 times in his first 21 games and then followed it up with remarkable form and scored 11 times in his last 9 games.
Inconsistency is the last thing Liverpool need.
