On today’s evidence, the Uruguayans might just be the worst side in Group A. The clean sheet was gifted by France rather than earned through defensive excellence. And their attacking plan appears to rest on Forlan creating something out of nothing. To be fair to him, he nearly did.
Henry is not the answer
There was something desperate about this substitution. Struggling for a breakthrough, Domenech turned to a former great whose career is now at the point where he is looking to cosy MLS retirement. His impact consisted of one bad free-kick.
The moment of class – Forlan’s turn
25 minutes in, Forlan spun gloriously away from Gallas. He then needlessly gave the ball away when he could have played Suarez in. Oh well.
The controversy – none really . . .
Referee Nishimura was perhaps the game’s stand-out performance. He got the two big calls right, correctly turning down a late handball appeal and sending off Lodeiro.
What next?
South Africans and Mexicans enjoyed this: both must feel pretty good about their chances in the upcoming matches. France can’t play this badly again (can they??) and will get something out of the game against Mexico. Hard to see Uruguay improving much and they will generously give the hosts a victory to celebrate.
