Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) and UK International Soccer Camps (UKISC) have announced an annual “WPS Camps” initiative that debut in the summer of 2009 throughout North America.
WPS Camps will feature a variety of weekly camp options for various age groups with the mission to create a challenging and dynamic training environment, while allowing players to personally experience what it takes to play in the pros from the pros. Camps will include player appearances from the stars of the new league at every camp (Heather Mitts and Hope Solo amongst others).
WPS Chief Operating Officer, Mary Harvey:
“Our WPS Camps will provide high-quality coaching, along with an opportunity for campers to meet our world-class athletes in person and learn what it takes to be a professional player. Our goal is to help motivate and develop the league’s future stars. It’s also a great way for us to reach fans first-hand and bring the WPS brand into soccer communities across the country.”
The 22 tentative WPS Camp locations for 2009 are:
Phoenix, Detroit, Cary, San Diego, Portland, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Dallas, Denver, Tampa, Columbus, Kansas City, Salt Lake, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Houston, Indianapolis, Memphis, Toronto, Vancouver and Seattle.
All participants will receive a Puma WPS ball and T-shirt, an individual player evaluation and other special camp giveaways. The total cost for a week is $190.00 for half-day and $265.00 for full-day. You can get more information here.
In short, they’re building support for the WPS by targeting their future market, supply chain and core group of fans – young soccer-playing girls across the US. It’s a great initiative, a smart initiative, aimed at building grass-roots presence for the WPS.
