The champions of Europe! Surely this should mean that this team is the best in Europe. But how can this be when chances are this team qualified for the competition by finishing only second or third in their domestic league, so arguably they are not even the best in their own country.
I know the Champions League is a huge exciting competition, but surely the time has come to make it a cup for exactly what it says “The Champions”! Yes television demands make it difficult for UEFA to accept this but a new format could still be a success and very profitable.
There are over fifty separate associations within UEFA so the Champions competition has huge possibilities. Forget making the champions of the smaller countries having to play qualifying rounds. They have won their league so have earned the right to play in the biggest cup competition from the start alongside all the other league winners. This in turn would make the UEFA cup a much more appealing prospect to both fans and television with bigger teams having finished second or third in their leagues entering this instead. The new “Champions Cup” can still be played in a group format to prolong the fixtures and give the television companies the revenue they desire and the supporters some big matches.
I know many will not agree but surely this will allow us to call the winners the true “Champions of Europe”.
