There have some been superb signings made by Premier League clubs in the last two transfer windows. Here are the five best in our opinion.
Michu to Swansea City
Michu signed a three-year contract with Swansea in July 2012 for the princely sum of just £2 million.
Considering this season has been his first season in English football, he’s played superbly scoring 15 goals in 28 Premier League matches as well as three goals in six matches in the League Cup and one goal in the FA Cup.
That works out at just over £105,000 per goal since he arrived at the club.
Robin van Persie to Manchester United
Robin van Persie moved to Manchester United from Arsenal in a deal worth £24 million but it’s the context and the overall value of his move, which is significant.
Sir Alex Ferguson reacted to bring in a solid goal scorer after losing the title to Manchester City in the 2011/2012 season and it’s worked because the Dutch forward has 19 goals in 29 Premier League games as well as eight assists and over 100 shots.
Add to that the three goals he scored in the Champions League during his first season at the club and it’s clearly one of the best signings of the football year.
Christian Benteke to Aston Villa
Benteke was a £7 million capture for the club from Genk and he arrived under a lot of pressure due to the presence of Darren Bent and the young age of the Aston Villa side.
They are still stuck in a relegation fight but his 13 goals in 27 league games have gone a long way to help the side avoid the drop so far. It’s a remarkable tally when you consider that Villa have scored only 32 goals all season and he’s only 22-years-old.
He’s also bagged four goals in the League Cup this season, which helped the side into a semi-final slot where they were eventually beaten by Bradford City.
Cesar Azpilicueta to Chelsea
Azpilicueta was a £6.5 million capture for Chelsea from Marseille and he deserves a mention because of that price weighed up against his consistency.
He’s only made 19 appearances for the club this season but he has played well enough to turn himself into the first choice right back at the club. He’s also featured in four other competitions for Chelsea this season as well as representing Marseille before he moved and Spain during the Olympics.
Lewis Holtby to Tottenham Hotspur
Holtby makes this list because of the price the club paid Schalke for him, which was just £1.54 million.
He’s already made a massive impact on the Tottenham side with his work rate, enthusiasm, energy and the fitness which allows him to play any role across the middle of the side.
Other players have scored more goals and played more games (he’s made just five appearances so far) but it’s the potential he has against the price paid, which makes him one of the best signings of the season.
