I’ve been holding back this post because I wanted to get nicer shots of the Pele Sports 1970 Football Boots for you guys, because I’m a bit too excited about these boots, so I wanted to do them as much justice as they deserve. I don’t think Pele needs any introduction, but maybe his new brand does. As the official description of the brand states:
“Pele Sports is the brand for football and footballers all over the world. Pele Sports is the brand for futebol bonito, the most beautiful sport in the world. And Pele Sports is inspired and influenced by none other than Pele, the best and most beloved footballer of all time.”
The brand is focused on delivering the perfect mix between performance, comfort, and design. It’s time that we see if that’s what they’ve achieved in a two-part series, first one focusing on the design and technology behind the new Pele Sports 1970 football boots.
The first impression is an absolute wow. I think the design team that worked on this boot drew a lot of inspiration from many of the succesful current boots on the market, to make it a modern boot for any footballer playing today, but to also deliver a classic touch to the boot in order to identify with Pele and his past. They really don’t look like the boots Pele was scoring with in the World Cups, but there are some elements inspired by classic football boots. I love the touches of gold on the boot, keeping the prestige of being associated with Pele very much alive. The logo is very well done, being the signature of Pele himself, a very fitting logo for the brand, since most people would pay just to have that signature on their pair of Nike or Adidas boots.
The leather on the boot is kangaroo leather with dual friction technology to give players more grip on the ball. I think that being a Pele boot, using leather is fitting, not going for synthetic materials to get less weight is a good idea in this case. I feel a bit sorry for all of the kangaroos in Australia that provide the leather, but in the end, you get a much longer-lasting boot, which makes all of us happier in the long-run.
From the top, the boot looks ever more impressive. I love it that they’ve included a cover for the laces, because boots without them are not the best for accurate shots. The inside of the boot is nicely designed, but I don’t get the random logo of Pele playing on the bottom, but it’s under the foot, so who cares anyways! The leather looks high quality, and the stitching looks highly durable.
The technology behind the boot is equally impressive. Above is pictured a Pele Sports 1970 boot taken apart, showing what makes up the boot itself. There is a reinforced heel area for better support of the heal, avoiding injuries and pain while playing, while also keeping comfort high. The EVA midsole was added for more absorption and to prevent problems with the Achilles heel. There is also a special stud configuration that absorbs pressure better, with a new cleat shape that reduces pressure on the knees when a player pivots.
Another impressive innovation, perhaps inspired by Apple Computers, is the “leather unibody.” What this means is that the top of the boot is made from one piece of kangaroo leather, which means less stitching, less areas where it can tear, less weight, and less deformation.
The Pele Sports 1970 Boots also come in white and red, which is not the version I prefer, but some of you might like it. It’s made in the exact same way as the black version, the only difference being in colour.
Overall, a great job done by the Pele Sports group, and I can’t wait to see what else they come up with in the future. I’ll be following this company and see as it develops over time. I’m just glad that Pele decided to do this himself, rather than just having some boots made from Nike or Adidas with his endorsement and make money that way. Pele deserves all of the respect he has, and this is another way that he shows it. He’s unique, and so he needs his own company to innovate and impact football in his way.
What do you think? Excited?
