Gianluigi “Gigi” Buffon has been a mainstay for the Azzurri since his debut at the age of 19. He was born in Carrara, the site in Tuscany where Michelangelo quarried marble for his famous sculptures. Both of his parents were competitive athletes. He has been with Juventus since 2001 and last night was his 102nd cap for the Azzurri.
Buffon was subbed out at halftime during Italy’s 1 x 1 first group match with Paraguay. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport and Radio RAI, Buffon had a problem with his sciatic nerve during warm-ups that was aggravated by the cold, rainy weather in Cape Town.

“Vogliamo regalare alla nazione e a noi un altro bel mese. Lippi ci sta caricando di tanta fiducia. Ma non pensiamo a Berlino, nel senso dell’impresa. Ancora dobbiamo giocare la prima partita. Andiamo avanti pian pianino e vediamo dove possiamo arrivare. Il Paraguay è la classica squadra sudamericana ostica e scorbutica. Poi ci sono tanti piccoli particolari che devono funzionare. Ha ragione Gattuso quando dice che ci sono certe paure. Perché vorresti che non piovesse, che il pallone andasse sempre dritto, che si giocasse sempre al livello del mare. Poi entri in campo e le situazioni non sono quelle che ti aspetti“.

Mr. Lippi Before the Game
“Cristiano Ronaldo ci vede favoriti? Fa piacere, questi sono grandi giocatori che sanno come gira il mondo e il vento. Ciò non significa che vinceremo ma la maniera peggiore di approcciarsi al Mondiale è dire quanto sono forti gli altri”.
A chi lo considera l’autentico fuoriclasse della Nazionale, Lippi risponde così:
“In panchina ci sono dodici giocatori, compreso Pirlo, fisioterapisti, medici o massaggiatori. Hai voglia a fuoriclasse…”.
Translation:
“Cristiano Ronaldo sees us as favorites? That pleases me. These are great players that know how the world turns and which way the wind blows. However, it doesn’t mean that we will win but the worst manner to approach the World Cup is to say how strong are the other sides.”
Who do you consider the authentic superstar of the Azzurri? Lippi responded this way:
“There are twelve players on the bench including Andrea Pirlo, physiotherapists, doctors and masseurs. You (the media) need a superstar…”

“Il risultato è il rammarico più grande: meritavamo i 3 punti. Purtroppo abbiamo preso gol alla loro prima azione su calcio piazzato. Può capitare. Poi abbiamo avuto una reazione da grande squadra, ma dobbiamo fare qualcosa di più sottoporta perchè partite cosi vanno vinte. La squadra ha risposto bene sia sul piano del gioco che fisicamente. Loro non hanno creato nulla a parte il gol. Buffon? Aveva accusato un problema alla schiena già nel riscaldamento. Pensava di potercela fare invece nell’intervallo mi ha chiesto la sostituzione. Per noi è stato un problema, non solo per il valore di Buffon ma anche perchè abbiamo perso un cambio che ci sarebbe stato utile nella gestione del finale della partita. Le sue condizioni saranno valutate dal medico nei prossimi giorni. Sono molto soddisfatto dell’approccio, della mentalità, della qualità di gioco”.

His condition will be evaluated by the doctor in the coming days… I am very satisfied from the approach, mentality and quality of play.”
