Welcome to a new feature in which I’ll look at the transfer rumours swirling around the division, trying to distinguish the possible from the ridiculous.
Joe Allen (Swansea) to West Ham
The Sunday People reports that Avram Grant is planning a £2.5mn swoop for the Swansea youngster. There’s no doubting that he is an exciting talent; he has a far better footballing brain than the average 20 year old player. West Ham, however, are looking for players suitable for a grand relegation scrap. For this task, Allen is too young and too unproven.
Verdict: Not happening.
Mikele Leigertwood (QPR) to Preston (LOAN)
Several websites are linking the QPR utility man with a loan move to Preston. This is a deal that makes a lot of sense; Preston are in desperate need of reinforcements and Leigertwood has been struggling to get a game at Loftus Road. Moreover, both his versatility and physical strength make him ideal for the difficult position Preston find themselves in. At the moment, however, the Rs have a couple of defenders out through either injury or suspension and this may stop them from making a deal.
Verdict: Maybe.
Sean St. Ledger (Preston) to Liverpool or Aston Villa
The Daily Mail suggests that the Ireland international might make a move to the Premier League. While he is an effective Championship performer, he is not a player Roy Hodgson will be taking a punt on. There is a small chance, however, that Villa could consider him. They don’t have much depth at the back and, if the money was right, could do a deal.
Verdict: Unlikely but not impossible.
