The original version of roulette was what we now call ‘American’ roulette. This has a wheel with 36 numbers, a ‘0’ and ’00’. Contrary to the belief of some, all bets do not lose if the ball lands in ‘0’ and ’00’ – just all outside bets such as odd/even and red/black.
Early roulette wheels had both the ‘0’ and ’00’ and still did when the game reached the ‘new world’ in the 1700s. Eventually the ’00’ was dropped from European roulette wheels, but not from the American version. The house edge with American roulette is 5.26%.
In South Africa the American version of roulette is not as popular as the European version, and we do advise you to choose the European version over the American one.
European Roulette
The most common form of roulette found at online casinos in South Africa is European roulette. This wheel does not have the ’00’. In the 1800s, European casinos started offering roulette without the ’00’, and this version became more popular than the orignal form as the house edge was ‘only’ 2.76%.

Martingale System

D’Alembert System
Named after the French mathematician Jean-Baptiste le Rond d’Alembert, this system is similar to the Martingale in that you select a base bet and then increase it by one unit when you lose, and decrease it by one unit when you win.
This system is much less prone to table limits than the Martingale system as you are increasing your bets as opposed to doubling them. However, it works on the simple premise that you will win more bets than you lose.
Reverse Martingale System
Quite simple to understand, as this is just the reverse of the Martingale, as the name implies. You double your bets when you win, and you return to your base bet when you lose.
Just like the ‘normal’ Martingale you need to avoid long losing streaks, as a long string of losses or considerably more losses than wins will deplete your bank roll.
Fibonacci System
Leonardo de Pisa, another mathematician, introduced the number sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233 … (the number in the sequence is the sum of the two numbers before it). You start this sequence with your base bet and then move one to the right with every loss (so if your base bet is R10, after three successive losses your bet is R30). When you win you move back TWO numbers to the left.
Again, this system can work well in the short term but falls foul of long losing streaks and table limits. For example, if you begin at R10 after seven straight losses (losing streaks are more common than you think) your bet is suddenly R210.
Labouchere System
This is a complicated system to follow but can work well. You begin by writing down a sequence such as 1-2-4-2-1. Your bet is the sum of the first and last number based on your base bet (So, if your base bet is R10, your total bet is R20). If your bet wins, you strike off the first and last numbers (so the sequence becomes 2-4-2), and if it loses, you add the total of those first and last numbers to the list (1-2-4-2-1-2). You then repeat.
The idea is that you eventually exhaust the numbers, at which point you start a new sequence. This system works well, aside from the dreaded losing streak again. Should you experience a few losses in a row from the off, then your sequence would be 1-2-4-2-1-2-3-4-5-6 and your base bet would be R60, plus you will have to grind out five more wins than losses before you get to start a new sequence.
Green Black Attack
A roulette-only betting system that covers 24 (plus 0 – this system only works with European roulette) numbers with 13 possible winning outcomes. You place five bets as follows:
- Split bet on 0 and 1 (17/1)
- Split bet on 0 and 2 (17/1)
- Split bet on 0 and 3 (17/1)
- Bet on middle column (2/1)
- Bet on black (Evens)
