Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs has insisted his club are not willing to sell star midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, stressing the Wolves want to build a “strong” team around the Belgian.

Manchester City have been chasing the 24-year-old all summer, and have already had an offer in the region of £40m rebuffed by the German club. The Sky Blues are expected to raise their offer in the coming days, but Wolfsburg want the player to sign a new deal to stay at the club.

“We do not want to sell him, but it is possible that there will be an offer in the next days,” Allofs was quoted as saying by The Times.

Despite City’s firm interest and imminent increased bid, Allofs says his club want De Bruyne to sign a new deal and is hopeful of keeping him as he feels anything can happen in football.

“But all the same, we want to keep him in our squad.

“We want to build a strong team and Kevin is supposed to be a big part of it. Anything can happen in football,” he added.

De Bruyne played a key role in Wolfsburg’s second placed finish in the Bundesliga last season, and also helped them win the German Cup, their first major trophy since winning the Bundesliga in 2008/09.

He topped the assists charts in the Bundesliga last season with 21, and also guided his club to their first silverware of the season in the German Super Cup earlier this month.
