Reports from Portuguese media outlet O Jogo claim Arsenal striker Joel Campbell could join Benfica if manager Arsene Wenger gives the green light for the transfer. The reports claims that the Costa Rican has been looked up by Benfica manager Jorge Jesus as the perfect replacement for Rodrigo Moreno who joined Valencia.

However the recent injury to striker Olivier Giroud could be a potential stumbling block for Campbell to join the Portuguese side. Thus any such move to the Estadio da Luz now entirely depends on Wenger, whether the French manager is willing to let go the 22 year old on a season long loan deal to hold him back in London for a stop gap solution, featuring the youngster in domestic competitions and cameo roles if he fails to snap up a quality striker before the transfer window slams shut.

Wenger had claimed two weeks ago that he backs Campbell to well in Arsenal colours, “He is a member of my squad at the moment, He had a good preparation and played well against Benfica (pre season). In training he is very focused and eager to do well. I would like to keep him.”

After having an impressive World Cup, Italian giants AC Milan were also interested in the player but reports have died down over the past few weeks.
