Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has outlined his side’s desire to win the Premier League title this season to finally end their eight year long trophy drought.
The Gunners have failed to lift a single trophy for close to a decade now, which has seen the Frenchman receive all round criticism from the club fans and football pundits across the world.
However, the North London club were managing to finish in top four and did not miss out on Champions League football in the process. The Frenchman now believes Arsenal’s worst days are behind and is hopeful to win the title this year.
Arsenal sit on top of the Premier League table with 16 points from seven games and are level on points with second place Liverpool, with the Gunners’ better goal ratio separating the two English giants.
The Gunners have lost in cup competitions to the lower division teams in the past and Wenger is looking to avoid a similar situation this season to make sure there is no stone unturned to bring silverware to the Emirates.
“Last season, we had a difficult start, but from the end of November to the beginning of May we redressed the results, The biggest disappointment – and for the first time in 17 years – was we lost in the cup competitions to lower division teams,” Wenger said.
“The Premier League is tight again this season. We need your [the fans’] support. We’ve had moments at the Emirates where we’ve not had that. But it’s our job to also inspire you.”
“We have huge ambition to win the league this season. At the end of May I’m confident we can have a very good meeting,” the Gunners manager concluded.
Wenger’s comments were echoed by Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal, who believes the Gunners have a competitive squad to win both the Premier League and Champions League this term.
“I would not say just one [trophy], I would say a few. Of course that is very tough to achieve,” Monreal told the club’s official website.
“The Premier League is very difficult, the Champions League, these are major trophies but we are on a good run. We are top of the table, it is still early doors, but we will take every game as it comes and at the end hopefully we’ll win a title.”
