In one the most startling revelations in quite some time, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that he had a chance to sign Eden Hazard before Chelsea in 2012 but failed to do so as the Gunners were incapable to paying a hefty fee for the dazzling Belgian.
The story has been reported by London Evening Standard.
“Yes, I wanted to take him, I had his agent at my home but again the barrier was financial and Chelsea made an effort that I couldn’t make,” Wenger said in an interview with Bein Sports.
We had earlier reported that Hazard has fallen out of terms with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho as French Ligue One champions Paris St Germain willing to shell a whopping amount for the Belgian.
Arsenal’s inability of signing big name players, especially a striker last summer as also in the January transfer window, have cost them dearly as the Gunners inexplicably dropped from a title winning position to finish fourth in the Premier League this season. Earlier Wenger had expressed regret at not signing Yaya Toure in 2003 despite being close to a deal.
