Wayne Rooney was expected to make his return this Sunday against Manchester City, after missing the last three games through suspension. The Red Devils’ captain though, is now in danger of sitting out this one as well, after limping off with a foot injury on Monday. The Telegraph have reported that Rooney appeared in ‘visible discomfort’ at a commercial event at Old Trafford the same afternoon.

Despite not being in the best form, Rooney has scored 3 Premier League goals for United this season. With Juan Mata misfiring in the number 10 role, the Englishman’s return was highly-anticipated, as United look to get their season back on track after a poor start. Rooney’s absence will be a big blow for the Red Devils, especially as Radamel Falcao is a doubt as well with a thigh injury. The Colombian missed the game against Chelsea at the weekend and even though he is expected to return at the Etihad this weekend, he may not be fit enough to play for 90 minutes.

Another big injury concern for United is centre-half Phil Jones, who is suspected to be suffering from shin-splints. He will be assessed in the coming days to understand the exact nature and extent of the injury. If the lay-off turns out to be long-term, it will not be good news for Louis Van Gaal, as his side are extremely short at the back anyway.
