Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has suffered a major setback.

The 30-year-old striker was recovering from his knee injury he picked up in February, but scans have showed that he is not healing as expected.

Rooney was expected to return in the first week of April, but United’s medical staff have now ruled that out.

The England striker could now miss the rest of the season with an injury. He is however expected to be a part of Roy Hodgson’s squad for the Euro 2016 according to reports in the English media.

Academy graduate Marcus Rashford has been leading the line for Manchester United in the absence of Wayne Rooney. Alongside Anthony Martial, Rashford has impressed with the first team so far.

Rooney is still the top scorer for Louis Van Gaal’s side this season with 14 goals and has been a big miss for a faltering Manchester United side. After a slow start, the England captain found his goalscoring touch before picking up the injury against Sunderland.

Manchester United are still in the FA Cup and the Europa League this season and Rooney’s absence will be a major blow to his side. The Old Trafford outfit are also fighting to finish fourth and qualify for next season’s Champions League.
