‘Win your tackles’ is a phrase that is used in every level of football, from grassroots all the way to the Premier League. We have seen some of the most combative players in England dominate in defence to attack, but who has won the most tackles in the league this season?

All stats per FotMob (tackles made)

10. Amadou Onana (60)

Starting off the list in tenth place is Everton’s Amadou Onana, who has impressed despite the Toffee’s poor display this season. The Belgian signed in the summer of last year with his technical ability and physical presence being a perfect mix for the Premier League.

Onana averages 1.7 tackles per 90 and boasts an impressive successful tackle percentage (65%), higher than the likes of Casemiro and Thomas Partey.

9. Tomas Soucek (61)

Beating the Evertonian into ninth place by just one tackle is West Ham stalwart, Tomas Soucek. The Czech has made more tackles than his midfield partner Declan Rice, in what has been a disappointing season for the Hammers.

David Moyes’ side take up the final place in the relegation zone and the Scottish manager is facing a real possibility of being sacked for the second time in east London.

8. Idrissa Gueye (61)

The second Everton player to be in this list is Senegalese inernational, Idrissa Gueye. Making the same amount of tackles as Soucek, the 30-year-old has shown yet again how much he loves a tackle.

In Gueye’s last three Premier League seasons he has finished in the top three for tackles made, even completing the most (135) in the 2016-17 campaign. Beating N’Golo Kante, who at the time was recognised globally as the best ‘tackler’ in Europe.

7. Pascal Struijk (64)

Leeds find themselves in yet another relegation battle, but their determination cannot be ignored. One player that has showcased this drive is defender Pascal Struijk, who has been an assured presence in the Whites’ ranks.

The Dutchman completes 2.7 tackles per 90 on average, which is the fourth highest in the league this season. Making a successful tackle 70% of the time, Struijk sits amongst the leagues best in the tackling department.

6. Timothy Castagne (64)

The first player to feature in this list that doesn’t play in a central position is Leicester full-back, Timothy Castagne. The Belgian has not been able to help the Foxes this season, as Brendan Rodgers’ side sit one point above the relegation zone.

5. Ruben Neves (65)

Portugal international Ruben Neves is a target for some of Europe’s elite clubs after an impressive spell at Wolves. Not only has he completed the most tackles in Julen Lopotegui’s side, he also completes the most successful long passes per 90 (6.7) in the Premier League.

The former Porto star has shown his ability both on and off the ball, averaging 1.7 tackles per 90 alongside his terrific passing range.

4. Cheick Oumar Doucoure (66)

Crystal Palace signed Cheick Oumar Doucoure in the summer and the midfielder has been a regular starter ever since. The Eagles have recently sacked Patrick Vieria, after a run of 12 games without a win and Roy Hodgson will take the reigns until the end of the season.

Doucoure will be pivotal for Hodgson in Palace’s relegation battle and has even drawn the attention from other Premier League clubs.

3. Moises Caicedo (70)

The first player to break into the 70 tackle mark on this list is Brighton’s Moises Caicedo. The youngster has been superb for the Seagulls and almost signed for Arsenal in January, but negotiations between the two clubs stalled.

Roberto de Zerbi has continued the progress that Graham Potter made and Caicedo has been a crucial part throughout, completing 1.5 tackles per 90.

2. Tyler Adams (89)

Missing out on first place is Leeds United’s Tyler Adams, boasting an impressive 89 tackles so far. The American has been a pit-bull in midfield for the Whites and has formed a tenacious partnership with his countryman, Weston McKennie.

The former RB Leipzig player averages 1.9 tackles per 90 and has received four yellow cards which is lower than the majority of players on this list.

1. Joao Palhinha (101)

The best tackler in the Premier League this season has been Fulham’s Joao Palhinha, who has made a staggering 101 tackles. 12 more than Adams in second place, the Portugal international is favourite to win Fulham’s player of the season.

Despite picking up 10 yellow cards this campaign, the 27-year-old has been a composed but authoritative figure in Marco Silva’s side.
