Which Horses Will Frankie Dettori Ride at Saturday’s Dubai World Cup Meeting?

Over the years Frankie Dettori has ridden the Dubai World Cup winner four times. The first of those successes came in 2000 with the very useful Godolphin horse Dubai Millennium, with the most recent only last year with Country Grammer.

That last-named horse is back again to try and defend his title in the main race on the card, but Frankie also has booked rides in 7 of the other 8 races. In fact, it’s only the opening race at 12:05pm that Dettori won’t have a chance to perform one of his famous flying dismounts.

  • 12:05 – Godolphin Mile (Group 2) (Dirt) (3yo+) 1m RTV (£500,000): NO RIDE

No booked ride for Frankie in the opener – but things get busy for the pocket Italian after this.

  • 12:40 – Dubai Gold Cup sponsored by Al Tayer Motors (Group 2) (Turf) (3yo+) 2m RTV: TRAWLERMAN @ 22/1

From the Godolphin camp and trained by John Gosden. Frankie also took this pot in 2012 with another ‘boys in blue’ runner Opinion Poll. Trawlerman landed the York Ebor last season under Dettori but has since run below-par at Ascot and in Saudi Arabia. Needs to bounce back.

  • 1:15 – Al Quoz Sprint sponsored by AZIZI Developments (Group 1) (Turf) (3yo+) 6f RTV: RAAED @ 14/1

Former Brian Meehan runner that his now trained in Saudi Arabia. First ride on this horse for Frankie, but was a fair third to Bathrat Leon, who won on this card 12 months ago. That also came off a massive 735-day break so should be a lot fitter for it. Looks an each-way call.

  • 1:50 – UAE Derby (Group 2) (Dirt) (3yo) 1m1½f RTV: WORCESTER @ 5/1

Bob Baffert runner that has only had two career runs. The last of those was when 3rd (of 4) in the Robert B Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita at the start of February. Will still be learning his trade but the slight step up in trip here looks a good move and hails from one of the best yards in the world. Cairo to beat but looks to hold a decent chance for Frankie.

  • 2:25 – Dubai Golden Shaheen sponsored by Nakheel (Group 1) (Dirt) (3yo+) 6f RTV: HOPKINS @ 10/1

Another Baffert runner for Frankie here. Lightly-raced 5 year-old that was last seen winning the G3 Palos Verdes Stakes at the start of February at Santa Anita. This will be harder but is well-suited by this 6f trip. Gunite, Lemon Pop and last year’s winner Switzerland are the ones he’s got to aim for.

  • 3:10 – Dubai Turf sponsored by DP World (Group 1) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m1f ITV4: LORD NORTH @ 6/1

This 7 year-old won this in 2021 and dead-heated again in the race in 2022. Therefore, Lord North comes here on a three-timer in the race and Dettori has been on his back each time. Warmed up for this with an easy win in the Lingfield Winter Derby at the end of last month so another bold bid on the cards.

  • 4:00 – Longines Dubai Sheema Classic (Group 1) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m4f ITV4: SENOR TOBA @ 50/1

The biggest-pred Dettori runner on the card. Is over from Hong Kong, but plenty to find on these terms with some very useful G1 middle distance performers. Last win came in a G3 at Sha Tin, so despite Frankie on his back, this grey would need to find some fair improvement here.

  • 4:35 – Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates Airline (Group 1) (Dirt) (3yo+) 1m2f ITV4: COUNTRY GRAMMER @ 9/4

Country Grammer and Frankie won this race last year and banked over £5m in the process. They duo are back for more this year and is expected to go off as the 2023 Dubai World Cup favourite. Was recently a close second in the world’s richest race – the Saudi Cup – at the end of February and has another huge chance. Would give Frankie and trainer Bob Baffert a fourth win each and also be only the second repeat winner in the race.
