The very best tennis has to offer while descend on Flushing Meadows for the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year. In preparation for August 28th’s start date, we are taking you through some of our early US Open tips and predictions for both the men’s and women’s singles.
Early US Open Tips and Predictions
US Open Women’s Singles
Marketa Vondrousova’s unexpected triumph at Wimbledon certainly upset the apple cart, as the 2023’s ‘big three’ all failed to reach the final last month.
Iga Swiatek’s storming year so far sees her head to New York as the reigning French and US Open champion, but not since Serena Williams in 2014 has Flushing Meadows seen a repeat winner in the women’s.
Despite being dumped out in the semi-finals in Montreal last month against Jessica Pegula, the Pole relished being back on hardcourt and she has won just over 55% of available points on this surface over the past year.
However, our preference is weighted slightly more towards Aryna Sabalenka, who was mightily unfortunate not to reach a first Wimbledon final in July.
She excelled at the only other hardcourt major at the beginning of 2023, winning the Australian Open after dropping just one set the entire tournament. Aside from Elena Rybakina she possesses the biggest serve on the Tour, which lends itself to this Slam.
Sabalenka’s semi-final defeat to Ons Jabeur will no doubt leave a bitter taste, particularly with the knowledge that the world number one spot was up for grabs, should she have made the final.
The Belorussian is a typically fiery character who will use this as motivation to propel her into the US Open. Her early-season form as a title winner at the Australian and subsequently Indian Wells is enough for us to take a chance on her early price of 11/2.
Big hitters find success here, and you’d be hard pushed to find a more powerful competitor than Sabalenka.
US Open Men’s Singles
It really is impossible to look past Carlos Alcaraz at this moment in time.
Very rarely have we seen Novak Djokovic quite as rattled as he was during their epic Wimbledon final, particularly in the latter stages of his career where he has grown to be more level-headed.
I think it is safe to say a lot of people’s predictions for the US Open rested on who prevailed at Wimbledon, and Alcaraz’s blossoming career just levelled up, on grass no less.
The Spaniard heads to the Big Apple as the reigning champion having claimed his first ever Slam here 12 months ago, and is rightly handed the shortest price as he looks to back up his claim as the only rightful heir to the ‘Big Three.’
The only other player not named Novak who might be worth considering is Daniil Medvedev. He, along with Alcaraz, is one of two players among the current pool who knows what its like to beat Djokovic over five sets, and he also possesses the necessary know-how at this venue having reached the final on two occasions, winning the title once in 2021.
He finally managed to shake-off his doubters on grass, eventually losing in straight-sets to Alcaraz in the semis, but his frightening speed and Tour-leading service game should see him enjoy another deep run here.
At 13/2, he is worth taking chance on as the next-best behind the two favourites, but if we were pressed to make a solid prediction we would struggle to look past Alcaraz at 11/8.
