After failing to qualify for European football next season, Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Leicester playmaker James Maddison as part of a rebuild for the upcoming 2023/2024 season.

Maddison is almost certain to leave the King Power Stadium this summer after five years at the club. Sunday afternoon saw the Foxes get relegated to the Championship after Everton managed to secure a win against Bournemouth.

The England international is deemed too talented to play in anything but the first-tier division as his goal and assists stacked up to 19 for the Premier League 2022/23 campaign.

Newcastle United are also linked with Maddison in a potential double swoop as the Magpies also have their eyes on winger Harvey Barnes. Recent Champions League qualification and a Saudi Arabia takeover could be a very tasty prospect for any potential newcomers in the upcoming transfer window.

However, it is the North London side who are leading the race to sign Maddison who is valued around the £40 million mark.

Tottenham are currently without a manager but owner Daniel Levy is keen to begin building a squad that would get his side back into Europe’s elite.

Although, club record goal scorer Harry Kane may not be part of Levy’s side as he is pushing for a summer move to Manchester United. The striker scored 30 of the 70 goals that Tottenham had scored all season and would be a big loss for the club.

Ex-Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes Maddison would be a better fit for Newcastle.

Wright said: “Going to a place like Newcastle, with his energy, he goes somewhere else because that’s what he’s about.

“I’d love to see him in a team that can transition. You can see someone like him, he can lead the transitional part and he can play out in the right team. You can see him at Newcastle.”
