Thailand won the AFF Championship last year and beat Lebanon, while also drawing to Iraq before losing on penalties at the King’s Cup.
An 8-0 friendly loss to Georgia in October highlighted some major issues for Thailand, which lead to the sacking of Alexandre Polking in November, who was handed a debut thrashing by Japan in a friendly – losing 5-0.
Thailand face a tough group campaign, as they face Oman, Saudi Arabia and Kyrgyzstan – with the latter being the only side near in terms of national rankings.
Player To Watch
Suphanat Mueanta has scored six goals in 14 appearances for his nation, averaging just under a goal per game and the youngster has become one of Thailand’s brightest sparks.
During his time in the Thai League, the 21-year-old contributed to 56 goals in 145 matches for Buriram United (32G+24A).
Muenata signed for Jupiler Pro League side, OH Leuven on loan in 2023 and has scored once in his five appearances for the Belgian side.
