Tahiyra Into 7/2 After Stunning Moyglare Stakes Win
The 2023 1,000 Guineas market was shaken up on Sunday after the Dermot Weld-trained TAHIYRA 2 year-old filly romped away with the Group One Moyglare Stakes at the Curragh (watch again below) – bookmakers reacted by installing her as the new 1,000 Guineas 2023 favourite @ 7/2 with 888Sport .
She’s a half-sister to the talented Tamawa, who was runner-up in the 2021 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp and also landed the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Turf, so has strong family blood line and after Sunday’s win the future looks very exciting for her.
Owned by the Aga Khan’s Studs, she was sent off as the second favourite in the Moyglare Stakes betting, with the unbeaten Aidan O’Brien runner – Meditate – the market leader.
However, she turned those odds around, coming with a storming run up the Curragh straight to pick off Meditate, who had made a rush for glory a few furlongs out.
Tahiyra seemed to enjoy the softer ground and the way she closed the gap on Meditate, who traded as low as 1.20 in-running, was super-impressive. That win was only her second career run and she remains unbeaten having bolted up on debut at Galway at the end of July.
Tahiyra Won’t Run Again This Year Though
She’s no more entries this year know, with her trainer, Dermot Weld preferring to take his time with her. Bookmakers reacted by elevating her to the head of the 2023 1,000 Guineas betting market for the Newmarket race, which will be on Sunday 7th May in 2023.
What Did Tahiyra’s Jockey and Trainer Say?
Jockey Chris Hayes told the Racing Post – “She is a little sweetheart!” said Hayes with a smile that could last until he sits on her again, which is likely to be next year as Dermot Weld said we wouldn’t see her again in 2022″
“She’s a funny character, but the good ones normally are. When you are riding her at home in work, if you send her down with a horse rated 45, she will stay beside it. If you send her down with a horse rated 90, she will stay beside it. “I knew the way she was travelling on the ground, she was going to quicken on it.”
Trainer Dermot Weld added – “She did it very well and she’s beaten a very high-class, multiple Group-winning filly. It was an excellent renewal of the race. I was afraid it might just come a little soon in her career, at Group 1 level, and I’ve always said what a beautiful filly she would be next spring. We’ve a lot to look forward to.”
He added: “I just told Chris to take his time and make steady progress, as she has lots of pace, and to come inside the last furlong. It takes confidence to do that. She’s a half-sister to Tarnawa, our champion filly. There is tremendous stamina in the pedigree, brilliance and speed.”

Dermot Weld Has NEVER Won The English 1000 Guineas
Tahiyra’s trainer Dermot Weld won the 2022 Irish 1,000 Guineas with Homeless Songs and has won the Curragh Classic five times in total.
However, surprisingly Weld has NEVER won the English 1,000 Guineas, but in Tahiyra he’s certainly got a lot to ponder over the winter and if heading to Newmarket next May, the bookmakers already feel Weld’s got a superb chance of breaking his Guineas duck in the UK.
Aidan O’Brien Still Has Three Of The Top Four In The 1000 Guineas Betting
Away from Tahiyra @ 7/2 with 888Sport at the top of the 1,000 Guineas market, we’ve still a familiar face propping up the next three in the betting. Yes, the powerful Aidan O’Brien yard have Meditate @ 15/2 with 888Sport, who saw the back of Tahiyra last time out, as the general second favourite with most layers.
O’Brien also has the exciting Statuette @ 9/1 with 888Sport, who has caught the eye in winning her opening two races, as third favourite, plus he’s also got Never Ending Story @ 20/1 with 888Sport, who was back in fourth in the Moyglare Stakes, but looks the sort that could improve when stepped up in trip next season.
