Syria 2023 Asian Cup Preview
Syria head to Qatar for this year’s edition of the AFC Asian Cup, in what will be their seventh appearance at the tournament’s finals. Nosour Qasioun have never advanced through the group stages, most recently exiting the competition in 2019 after finishing bottom of Group B.
They’ll be hoping to overcome that hurdle this time around though, and they have a real chance to do so after finishing top of their second round qualifying group ahead of the likes of China and the Philippines.
The Syrians have been drawn into Group B once again for the tournament in Qatar, and will go head-to-head with Australia, Uzbekistan and India for a spot in the knockout stages.
Héctor Cúper’s side get their campaign underway on 13 January against Uzbekistan in Al Rayyan, followed by a tough battle against Australia five days later, before they draw their group stage action to a close on 23 January against India in Al Khor.
Syria Player To Watch
Despite being born and raised in Argentina, Ibrahim Hesar is our Syrian player to watch at the Asian Cup in Qatar. The 30-year-old currently plies his trade in the Argentine Primera Division with Belgrano, where he is typically deployed as a winger.
Hesar, along with fellow Argentina-born midfielder Ezequiel Ham, only made his debut for Syria in 2023, however he has already amassed five caps and two goals.
Both of those goals came in the lead-up to the Asian Cup as Hesar netted in a 1-1 draw against Kyrgyzstan at the start of January, before adding his second senior international goal against Malaysia just three days later.
Clearly a man in-form heading into the tournament, Syria’s left-winger is undoubtedly one to keep an eye on as he looks set to start under his compatriot Cúper in their opening game against Uzbekistan.
