Sheffield United vs West Ham (2-2) Report: McBurnie Rescues Point For Hosts
Both West Ham and Sheffield United came into this one in poor form, with the Hammers fresh off the back of a disappointing FA Cup third round exit to Bristol City, meanwhile Chris Wilder’s side were winless in four straight league matches.
As well, David Moyes‘ side are having to deal with several key absentees through international involvement, injury and suspension, with Maxwel Cornet and Danny Ings coming in for a rare start.
It didn’t take long for Cornet to make his mark either, as the Ivorian turned home his first goal in a Hammers shirt at the far post to open the scoring after 28 minutes. That lead lasted a mere 16 minutes however.
Ben Brereton Diaz was the one to level the score with his first ever Premier League goal, emphatically finishing past Alphonse Areola after a scramble in the box just before the half time whistle.
A cagey second period saw both sides have opportunities to seal the three points, but it was West Ham who looked to have done it in the 79th minute when James Ward-Prowse turned home a penalty.
There was plenty of drama to come yet though, with Rhian Brewster being shown his marching orders for a nasty challenge after just 13 minutes on the field. Four minutes later, Vladimir Coufal was shown his second yellow card in four minutes, seeing both sides reduced to 10-men.
Some fortune landed the Blades’ way six minutes later though, as they were awarded a penalty by Michael Salisbury, which Oli McBurnie coolly converted to rescue a point in the dying moments.
West Ham remain in sixth place following the full-time whistle, still on the hunt for European football, while Sheffield United continue to occupy bottom spot in the Premier League table.
