Sarina Wiegman has named her 23 player England squad ahead of the upcoming World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, with Beth Mead amongst those missing with injury.

England and Arsenal superstar Beth Mead has been recovering from an ACL injury since November and despite the star saying she was ahead of schedule with recovery, the World Cup has come just too soon for Mead.

Two others who have been suffering with injuries in the Lioness squad are Millie Bright and Beth England, however both have been included in Sarina Wingman’s 23-player squad for the World Cup.

Bright hasn’t played for Chelsea since March with an injury, but has been included in the England World Cup squad as the captain as she is expected to fully recover just before the tournament begins in July.

Another player who will return from injury is Barcelona’s Lucy Bronze, with Wiegman speaking positively about the defender following the squad announcement.

“Lucy is fit. She is fully in training and she’s getting ready for the [Champions League] final on Saturday.

“Millie is in a good place. She’s still positive and she’s building. But we have some time so she’ll be with us too. It looks good.”

The Lioness’ will open their World Cup campaign on the 22nd of July against Haiti, before facing Denmark and China in Group D.
