Rio Ferdinand has hit out at former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson over his criticisms of new Manchester United signing Marcel Sabitzer.

Manchester United were forced into action on deadline-day, as Christian Eriksen was confirmed to be ruled out for at least three months due to an ankle injury.

United quickly identified Sabitzer as a short-term replacement for the Dane, striking a deal with Bayern Munich to sign the midfielder on loan.

The arrival of Austria international Sabitzer didn’t come without its criticisms, however.

Paul Merson on Marcel Sabitzer

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson questioned the move, labelling the transfer as a “panic buy”.

“He doesn’t get in the Bayern Munich team, as the manager just said, he’s way off that. I know their two in midfield is cemented but if he was that good, he’d be pushing.” Merson said on Sky Sports.

“So again it goes back to panic. There was no interest in him on January 1st. Now, it’s a panic buy. Eriksen has just got injured. It’s a panic. You’re buying fourth choice Bayern Munich players. For me, I’m not sure about that.”

The former Arsenal man continued: “This lad wasn’t on the radar before. He doesn’t get into the Bayern Munich team.

“If I’m a Manchester United fan or a Chelsea fan, I’d be looking and going, he doesn’t get anywhere near Bayern’s first team. So if he’s not playing in their first team, why would we want him in our club?”

“Is he going to make us better? Is there players there already who should be better than him? In my opinion, yes.”

Rio Ferdinand hits out at Merson

Ferdinand was quick to defend United’s new midfield man, claiming that Merson had probably not seen the 28-year-old play.

“I am absolutely delighted with (the signing),” Ferdinand said. “If I was trying to get a short-term replacement for Eriksen at the drop of a hat, Sabitzer is the player I would get.

“He will be a really good signing for Man United. He’s an experienced player who has played in big games, Champions League games.

“For me, those comments (from Merson) stink of someone who hasn’t seen him play. This guys knows how to play football.

“You don’t get signed by Bayern Munich if you’re a chump. He’s a really, really good footballer. Manchester United couldn’t have done any better, I don’t think.”

Sabitzer joins United as they sit fourth in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils are currently priced at 2/7 to finish in the top four on Premier League betting sites.
