OLD SMOKE (system – Richard Fahey, first-time cheekpieces, turf)
Those ridden patiently dominated in the Class 2 London Gold Cup Heritage Handicap at Newbury on May 20th and I was taken by the effort of 18-1 two-length sixth OLD SMOKE, who fared second best of those to race up with the pace. He was one-length and two places head of front-running 4-1 favourite Desert Hero who went on to score at Royal Ascot. Richard Fahey’s grey disappointed at Musselburgh next time but the good to firm ground was probably to blame and he’ll be happier on today’s good to soft going. Fahey reaches for the cheekpieces and, since 2010, he’s 34 from 229 (15%) when using this headgear on a turf runner for a profit of £41.50 to a £1 level stake at SP>

CORNICELLO (system – Jamie Snowden, young handicap chasers)
Jamie Snowden does well with handicap chasers aged six or younger who were having their first or second handicap start over the larger obstacles. He’s won with 24 of the 92 qualifiers (26.1% strike-rate) for a profit of £38.78 to a £1 level stake at SP. CORNICELLO, twice a winner in handicap hurdle company last autumn, looks very interesting on his debut over fences. His stable is in good form, with two winners and a 28-1 second from just three runners in the past fortnight.
