I desperately want to oppose REPUBLICAN in this 2m7f handicap hurdle as, according to my tracker notes, he’s a ‘total nutjob, best left-handed’. He’s lost 11 in a row since his sole career success – a head victory at Taunton in December 2019 where hanging violently left actually helped him as he ended up on the better ground. His fans must have deep pockets, as he was backed from 9-2 into 11-4 with some firms when the betting opened on Monday afternoon. The trouble is this race is not very deep and he could still run second. My preference is top side with SHIGHNESS, winner of three of her last seven starts. She recorded a career-best RPR (Racing Post Rating) when a close-up fourth at Haydock 39 days ago and won here at Market Rasen on her penultimate start. Freshness seems to be the key and her record in the past two seasons when rested for at least five weeks stands at 1114 (3-4). Recommendation: Buy SHIGHNESS in Market Rasen 2.45
WOLVERHAMPTON 7.00
REVOLUTIONISE tends to come good at the start of the new year and the Stuart Williams-trained seven-year-old has form figures in January/February, since gelded, of 11121826672 (4-11) for a profit of £9.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. When returned to the track between 15 and 28 days since his last run, those figures improve to 2211117 (4-5) with the defeat excusable as he failed to settle at Southwell on his penultimate start. He finished a solid 16-1 second at Lingfield 17 days ago and looks set to go well. Buy in the 50-25-10 market or back him each-way with Spreadex.
