NEWCASTLE 12.30

WELL ABOVE PAR (system – Gold Well, first run after a wind operation, handicap chase)

Progeny of the sire Gold Well are five from 22 when running in handicap chase company on their first start following a wind operation and backing them blind would have returned a profit of £15.40. Three of the beaten horses finished second (20-1, 7-1 and 9-2) and four more were third (12-1, 15-2, 6-1 and 11-2), suggesting that WELL ABOVE PAR has each-way claims on his reappearance for in-form Lucinda Russell.

DONCASTER 2.22

WILLASTON (system – Mark Walford, hurdle to chase switchers)

Mark Walford has a useful record with runners switching from hurdles to fences, scoring with 14 of the 51 qualifiers for a profit of £23.88 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners only 7.28). WILLASTON, priced up as the 10-1 outsider of five at the time of writing, was a winner over hurdles on his penultimate start and is taken to cause a minor upset on his chase debut under Rules.

BANGOR 2.38

HAVEANOTHERGOFLO (system – Donald McCain, non-handicap hurdles, Bangor)

Backing all of Donald McCain’s hurdlers at Bangor, in non-handicap company, would have found 70 winners from 244 bets (28.7% strike-rate) for a profit of £56.20 to the usual £1 stake. HAVEANOTHERGOFLO changed hands for £70,000 after landing his sole point-to-point start by six lengths and looks backable on his debut under Rules.

NEWBURY 3.05

POTTERMAN (system – Alan King, first-time visor)

I’ve fired off a few arrows at the outsiders in the Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase, including Alan King’s POTTERMAN. He has a solid record on good ground and the application of a first-time visor could help. King has a 17 from 105 record with such runners in the current century for a profit of £35.27. Potterman was still in contention when unseating as an 11-1 shot in this race two years, has improved since (according to the official handicapper) and yet is four or five times the price this time around.

BANGOR 3.13

WALK IN MY SHOES (system – Milan, first run after a wind operation)

Since wind operations had to be declared in late January 2018, progeny of the sire Milan have performed well over obstacles on their first run after the surgery. The score stands at 20 winners from 94 bets for a huge profit of £127.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. Jonjo O’Neill’s WALK IN MY SHOES has gone well fresh in the past and is taken to defy a 278-day break.

WOLVERHAMPTON 5.50

TWINKLE STAR (system – Amo Racing-owned newcomers)

Since the start of last year, owners Amo Racing have a 22 from 84 record with newcomers for a profit of £50.63 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 14.47). Paul & Oliver Cole will be keen to impress their new owners with TWINKLE STAR in this fillies’ novice contest and the daughter of Oasis Dream looks nicely drawn in stall 5.
