Progeny of the sire Starspangledbanner tend to be precocious and backing the two-year-old who were making their racecourse debuts on turf would have found 28 winners from 171 bets (16.4% strike-rate) for a profit of £56.61 to a £1 level stake at SP. Roger Varian’s MARKAKOL, whose dam scored at the first time of asking and was also a winner on her three-year-old debut, looks well drawn in stall 3 and this 350,000gns purchase can make a fast start to his career.

HAT TOSS (system – New Bay 3yo handicappers, recent run)
Simply backing three-year-old progeny of the sire New Bay in handicaps, who last ran between one and 28 days ago, would have found 35 winners from 153 bets (22.9% strike-rate) for a profit of £33.56 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those who finished in the top four last time out were 27 from 87 (31%) for a profit of £53.31. HAT TOSS is an eight-race maiden but caught the eye in third place at Wolverhampton last time, doing best of those to come from off the pace, and can get off the mark today.

QUEENS FORTUNE (system – Anthony Honeyball, first run in a handicap hurdle)
Anthony Honeyball does well with horses having their first outing in a handicap hurdle, scoring with 29 of the 111 qualifiers (26.1% strike-rate) for a profit of £86.83 to a £1 level stake at SP. QUEENS FORTUNE finished well beaten in a maiden hurdle at Wincanton last time but has undergone wind surgery since and looks a likely improver on her handicap debut.
